Transforming food waste into sustainable solutions for agriculture

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced that the Memphis Zoo will receive a grant of $395,000 to transform food waste destined for landfills into sustainable fertilizer for local agriculture. The grant, awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), is part of a nationwide initiative involving 26 cooperative agreements aimed at supporting innovative waste management practices and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

“The forward-thinking leadership at the Memphis Zoo, which also received federal funding for rooftop solar panels earlier this year, is to be commended for its continued commitment to sustainability. This USDA grant will support an innovative waste management program that turns food waste into a valuable resource for local farmers. The Zoo’s commitment to ‘going green’ serves as a model for our community and beyond.”
