June 4, 2020

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the Stax Museum of American Soul Music will be receiving a grant of $168,728 from the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences' African American History and Culture program. The grants are designed to build the capacity of African American museums and support the growth and development of museum professionals.

The Stax Museum was awarded one of 22 grants announced this week. It will go to improving the visitor experience and present a more accurate and well-rounded account of the history of Stax Records and the City of Memphis, according to the winning project description.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

"Memphis is proud to be the home of Stax Records and of the magnificent Museum showcasing its history. This significant grant will make improvements to the Museum's technical infrastructure and improve the already impressive aesthetic experience a visit to Stax can be. I congratulate the Museum and its dedicated staff on this recognition."

The funding for these grants came with the passage of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture Act which helped establish the Museum on the National Mall.
