Congressman Cohen Announces Grants to UTHSC and University of Memphis

Focus of spending is mental health, decision making

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the University of Memphis will be receiving $395,791 from the National Institute on Drug Abuse for research identifying the neurophysiological basis of "risky decision-making."

Congressman Cohen also announced that the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) will be receiving $388,611 from the National Institute of Mental Health to study genes, neural circuits and behavior.

The University of Memphis has received $1,194,623 in grants so far this year and UTHSC has received $7,465,705 this calendar year.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

"Mental health research like that underwritten by these grants supports the University of Memphis' and the UT Health Science Center's leadership roles in medical research and keeps these Memphis institutions strong."
