WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded research grants totaling $1,515,998 to the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

"The research done at UTHSC and St. Jude keeps Memphis a leader in medical research and funding from HHS is key to maintaining that," said Congressman Cohen.

HHS allocates millions of dollars for medical research each year through its various institutes and research centers.

UTHSC is receiving $515,999 grant from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) for research into the origin of phantom limb sensations.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has been awarded $999,999 from the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI). This grant is for research into how medications react differently to some patients based on their genetic differences.
