Congressman Cohen Announces National Science Foundation Award made to University of Memphis

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded University of Memphis a grant of $35,000 for students to attend the CBMS Conference: The Cahn-Hilliard Equation: Recent Advances and Application.
The conference will focus on these profoundly complex mathematical equations as explained by University of Poitiers (France) Mathematician Alain Miranville and will be held at Montgomery Bell State Park's Conference Center and Inn in Burns, Tennessee, from May 20 to 24, 2019. Thanks to this grant, about 30 students will be able to attend the conference.
The NSF supports research, innovation, and discovery that provides a source of economic growth in the United States. The conference will center around Professor Miranville's lectures about the applications of Cahn-Hilliard (CH) type equations. Cahn-Hilliard equations can be applied in fluid dynamics, imagine inpainting, and tumor growth.
"This award will help University of Memphis students attend the CBMS Conference and learn about CH-type equations and their many uses in addressing future scientific challenges," said Congressman Cohen.
