WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has awarded Regional One Medical Center funding for 2.33 new medical residency positions through the Department of Health and Human Services Direct Graduate Medical Education Program. It has also awarded the medical center funding for 2.33 positions and its Indirect Graduate Medical Education Program. The funding for 200 positions nationwide, announced today, is targeted at facilities in underserved communities and is focused on primary care and mental health specialties.

Medical residents work directly with patients under the supervision of more senior physicians.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

“Training great doctors is a Regional One specialty and this supplementary funding will help accelerate its already exemplary record. This funding for additional medical residents will expand our talented medical workforce, keep doctors in the area, and benefit Memphis’ underserved residents. This is welcome news.”
