Congressman Cohen Applauds Acceleration of Student Debt Relief

January 12, 2024

Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) debt-cancellation sped up

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today applauded the Biden Administration decision to shorten the path to student debt cancellation under the Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) Program. Those students who borrowed less than $12,000 and have been in repayment for 10 years will have their entire debt cancelled next month without taking any action. The decision accelerates the SAVE deadlines by six months, making life-changing opportunities for student borrowers.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

“Joe Biden is nothing if not persistent in his efforts to reduce student debt. As the husband of a community college professor, his heart has always been in the right place on this issue. I am pleased to see the program being accelerated to help more student borrowers sooner, and help them get on with life without crippling debt. I commend the administration for making this a priority.”

An estimated 6.9 million borrowers are currently enrolled in SAVE. To sign up for SAVE or see if you are eligible, visit: studentaid.gov/SAVE
