Congressman Cohen Applauds Ways & Means Committee for Voting to Release Trump Tax Returns

December 20, 2022

After years of fighting for it, Democrats will finally release Trump tax returns

WASHINGTON -- Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, today applauded the decision by the House Ways & Means Committee to release former President Donald Trump’s income tax returns.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

“When Nixon was embroiled in scandal, he declared ‘I am not a crook.’ As we all know, once the evidence came to light, it turned out he was. I suspect that Trump’s tax returns will add even more charges to his rapidly growing rap sheet.

“The public deserves to know what Trump, a known crook, is hiding in his returns. Since he has refused to release them—like every other president and major-party nominee for the past forty years—I believe Congress had no choice but to seek them out. I applaud Chairman Neal and Ways & Means Democrats for doggedly pursuing these returns, even as Trump and his cronies contorted themselves into convoluted legal arguments and phony excuses to block transparency and accountability. All the while, Trump tried to use the IRS to go after his political adversaries.”
