Congressman Cohen Calls for the Timely Release of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s Investigation in Trump Purloined Documents Case

January 7, 2025

Says Judge Cannon “continues to be Trump’s lead acolyte, rather than an impartial federal judge”

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, today condemned the unwarranted intervention of Judge Aileen M. Cannon, a Trump appointee who dismissed the classified documents case, by enjoining the imminent release of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s final report.

The action temporarily bars release of the findings to the public in the days leading up to Trump’s January 20 inauguration.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

“Judge Cannon was wrong in dismissing the Trump classified documents case for spurious reasons and is especially wrong in preventing the public from a full understanding of the case against the former President compiled by Special Counsel Jack Smith. Judge Cannon continues to act as Trump’s lead acolyte, rather than as an impartial federal judge.

“History requires a full disclosure of the facts. The public has a right to know what Smith found before the report is forever buried by a new administration.”

The report had been expected to be released as soon as Friday.
