Congressman Cohen Celebrates World Press Freedom Day

Expresses concern over Trump disinformation, attacks on news outlets
MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) will recognize World Press Freedom Day on Saturday, and released the following statement:
“Press freedom and the principle of independent news media are essential to democratic government but are under attack around the world and even in our country. Next week, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing and condemning the Trump Administration’s assault on the press and individual news organizations. A free people require a vigorous and independent Fourth Estate, and it’s up to all of us to cherish and protect it.”
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) created World Press Freedom Day in 1993 to celebrate the principles of press freedom and assess the state of press freedom around the world. Its recognition is intended to defend the press from attacks on its independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
