Congressman Cohen to Chair First Hearing on the Equal Rights Amendment in 36 Years

Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Hearing on Tuesday

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, will preside Tuesday, April 30, over the first hearing on the Equal Rights Amendment in 36 years.

The hearing will consider Representative Carolyn Maloney of New York's H.J.Res.35, that would restart the amendment ratification process, and Representative Jackie Speier of California's H.J.Res.38, which would remove the arbitrary deadline to ratify that was included in the preamble of the original constitutional amendment in 1972.

Witnesses at the hearing will be Kathleen M. Sullivan, a partner in the law firm Quinn Emanuel Urquhart and Sullivan; Nevada State Senator Pat Spearman; Professor Elizabeth Price Foley of the Florida International University College of Law; and actor and advocate Patricia Arquette.
