Congressman Cohen Commemorates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service

January 19, 2020

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) plans to commemorate the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Holiday and Day of Service on Monday by participating in several Dr. King-inspired events. He also released this statement:

"Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a time for both reverence and sorrow. Dr. King was the conscience of the nation, teaching us the true meaning of fairness and justice. His dream inspired a movement that changed our country for the better. Sadly, when it comes to issues like eliminating poverty, assuring access to health care and protecting the rights of Americans to vote and workers to organize, his dream is still just that: a dream.

"Dr. King's vision was one of hope. As we commemorate and celebrate the life of Dr. King, let us each recommit to fulfilling his dream and reflect on the wisdom of some of his last words on his last night in Memphis:

" ‘Let us rise up tonight with a greater readiness. Let us stand with a greater determination. And let us move on in these powerful days, these days of challenge to make America what it ought to be. We have an opportunity to make America a better nation.' "
