Congressman Cohen Commemorates International Holocaust Remembrance Day

January 26, 2024

MEMPHIS -- Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) plans to commemorate Saturday’s International Holocaust Remembrance Day on the 79th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp in 1945 and will remember the horrific murder of six million Jewish people and others during the Holocaust.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

“Every year, on the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camps in 1945, we remember some of the darkest days in world history by vowing that ‘Never Again’ will we permit such barbarity and inhumanity. The United Nations established this day in 2004 as a way for the world to remember the past and to avert future genocides. Perhaps the most important part of remembrance is standing up against injustices wherever they occur. It is especially appropriate to renew that commitment today as antisemitism and racist hate, violence and extremism rise around the world and another genocidal war inflames Ukraine. I join my fellow Americans, and others around the world, as we pause to remember, reflect and resolve to continue our fight against dangerous ideologies and racial, ethnic and religious intolerance.”

Congressman Cohen sponsored and passed legislation to create the Tennessee Holocaust Commission as a state senator in 1984. As a senior member of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, better known as the Helsinki Commission, he has been a strong and consistent voice against antisemitism both nationally and internationally. Congressman Cohen has been a consistent supporter of legislation and other Congressional efforts to assure the perpetual memory of those lost in the Holocaust.
