Congressman Cohen Commemorates International Holocaust Remembrance Day

January 27, 2023

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today commemorated International Holocaust Remembrance Day on the 78th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp in 1945 and remember the horrific murder of six million during the Holocaust.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

“Every year, on the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camps in 1945, the world remembers some of the darkest days in history by vowing that ‘Never Again' will we allow such inhumanity. The United Nations established this day in 2004 as a way for the world to remember the past and to prevent future genocidal terror. Perhaps the most important part of remembrance is standing up against injustices wherever they occur. It is especially appropriate to renew that commitment today as antisemitism and racist hate, violence and extremism rise around the world and another genocidal war inflames Ukraine. I join my fellow Americans, and people around the world, as we pause to remember, reflect and resolve to continue our battle against dangerous ideologies and racial, ethnic and religious intolerance.”

Congressman Cohen sponsored and passed legislation to create the Tennessee Holocaust Commission as a state senator in 1984. As a senior member of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, better known as the Helsinki Commission, he has been a strong and consistent voice against antisemitism on both national and international fronts. Congressman Cohen has been a consistent supporter of legislation and other Congressional efforts to assure the perpetual memory of those lost in the Holocaust.
