Congressman Cohen Commends Airlines for Requiring Face Masks

April 30, 2020

Sought requirement from federal health and safety officials and airlines

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Aviation, tonight commended Delta Airlines, American Airlines, United Airlines and JetBlue Airways for requiring passengers and crews to wear face masks on flights. Congressman Cohen had earlier asked the Federal Aviation Administration, the Department of Transportation, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to mandate this precaution against spreading the coronavirus, and had commended JetBlue earlier this week for implementing the proposal.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

"It appears that the wisdom of requiring face masks for both passengers and crews is becoming obvious, and I commend American and Delta for joining JetBlue in implementing this commonsense policy. People are dying because of exposure to the virus, and planes are a confined space where social distancing at six feet is difficult. I strongly urge Southwest to join its competitors in making this potentially life-saving policy change."
