Safety U app helps college freshmen avoid compromising situations

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today commended Jayda and Anaya Murray of Cordova for winning the Congressional App Competition for the 9th Congressional District of Tennessee with their Safety U app. The app presents a series of unsafe situations an entering freshman might encounter at college and offers a range of options for dealing with them.

Officially launched by the U.S. House of Representatives in 2015, the nationwide Congressional App Competition allows students to compete against their peers by creating an application (or "app") for desktop/PC, web, tablet, mobile device or other devices using any programming language. It is designed to promote innovation and engagement in computer science.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

"This app was selected not only for its impressive code but also because it has an important educational and social mission. This app is an imaginative and practical way to introduce incoming freshmen to potentially threatening situations and helps steer them toward the correct, and safest, responses. It is aptly named ‘Safety U' because its use will prepare new college students for campus life. I congratulate the Murray sisters on this achievement."
