December 1, 2023

In floor speech, praises Memphis-based life-saver and its supporters

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) went to the House floor this morning to deliver a speech praising the St. Jude Children’s Hospital and participants in Saturday’s St. Jude Memphis Marathon. See the text and video below.

After the speech, he made the following statement:

“As I thought about what I might speak about this morning, I considered the hostages still in Gaza and their families. I considered remembering First Lady Rosalynn Carter who passed on Sunday and all she did for mental health awareness and other causes. I considered talking about the 60th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination and the unanswered questions that still swirl around it. I considered speaking about the shootings of Palestinian students in Vermont. I even considered speaking about voting for the expulsion of Congressman George Santos and the 105 courageous Republicans who defied their Speaker and voted their consciences. But I decided to speak on something positive and light, and the St. Jude Memphis Marathon came to mind.”

In his speech, Congressman Cohen said in part:

“Memphis is a city that has much to be proud of. One of our most prideful things is that we’re home to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital that cures cancer, tries to cure the ones that they haven’t yet, and gives children with cancer opportunities to be treated free of charge. This week there will be a St. Jude Marathon through Memphis, a big race – thousands and thousands of runners – to raise money for St. Jude and to bring attention to what St. Jude does for the children of the world. I praise St. Jude and I’m appreciative they’re in Memphis, and we support them.”
