Congressman Cohen Condemns Latest Child Shooting

Says proper handling and gun locks could limit carnage
WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) expressed sadness at yet another child killed in gun violence – this time, 12-year-old Tytkeanna James on Tuesday – and urged all gun owners to be more attentive to the safe storage and handling of firearms and to consider using gun-trigger locks available at all Memphis Police Department precincts. He made the following statement:
"Again on the streets of Memphis a child has been shot and killed and another family has been torn apart by gun violence. This is just weeks after a two-year-old was the victim of an accidental shooting. A recent study indicates Memphis is ranked first in the unintentional shootings of minors among the country's large cities, a miserable measure of careless disregard for young lives and a distinction we must work to shed.
"I'd like to remind my constituents that the Memphis Police Department has gun locks at each of its precincts and urge gun owners to avail themselves of these critical, life-saving devices."
