Congressman Cohen Condemns Loss of Family Planning Funding

Says Governor Lee’s “inflexibility” is putting the vulnerable at risk
WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today expressed his disappointment at the State of Tennessee’s failure to get recertified for Title X funding, which will result in the loss of millions in funding for birth control, pregnancy testing, and basic infertility services for low-income and uninsured individuals. He made the following statement:
“The loss of Title X family planning funds will have a dramatic effect on the ability of Tennesseans to access family planning resources. I am working identify other potential sources of federal funding for our county health departments to replace some of this $6 million that the State cannot receive due to the Governor’s unreasonable social program positions. Governor Lee’s inflexibility on these issues will restrict the services that county health departments can provide to some of our most vulnerable citizens and is shortchanging the State on its ability to receive its fair share of federal funding.”
