Congressman Cohen Condemns Proposal to Study Ending Federal Support for Education in Tennessee

Says Republicans are attempting to lead “the race to the bottom”
MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) reacted with disbelief on hearing that state Republican leaders will create a working group to see whether Tennessee can operate its educational programs without federal support. The proposal was floated earlier today by Tennessee state House Speaker Cameron Sexton of Crossville and Lieutenant Governor Randy McNally.
Congressman Cohen made the following statement:
“This proposal is outrageous and infuriating but is in keeping with state Republican legislators’ efforts to see Tennessee lead the race to the bottom. Any limit on federal education funding would disproportionately harm students with disabilities and parents who can’t afford the school meals on which their children depend. This harmful proposal must receive the full-throated rejection with which I know most Tennesseans will view it.”
