Congressman Cohen Demands Attorney General Correct Erroneous Statements about Mail-In Voting

September 4, 2020

In letter to Barr, points to transparently false allegations

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), Chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, today called upon Attorney General William Barr to publicly correct false statements he made in a CNN interview regarding alleged fraudulent mail-in voting. Barr's office has acknowledged he cited a non-existent federal indictment and mischaracterized the facts of a minor state prosecution in Texas.

Congressman Cohen's Subcommittee has jurisdiction over voting rights. As chairman, the Congressman offered the Attorney General an opportunity to correct the record at a public hearing.

The letter reads in part:

"By trying to discredit our voting systems and sow doubt in the legitimacy of our elections, you are throwing fuel on the situation you dub ‘playing with fire.' … State governors, secretaries of state, and legislators … understand the importance of democracy and the danger of the Coronavirus. These elected state officials are doing their best to ensure every eligible American citizen can cast a meaningful ballot. The only ones playing with fire and trying to torch American democracy are Donald Trump and you."
