Congressman Cohen Demands that Postal Processing Capabilities Be Restored

August 19, 2020

In letter to Postmaster General, says reducing service “will continue to harm people”

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today wrote to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy expressing his concern about the removal of sorting machines from Memphis postal processing facilities and the delays in delivery times that have resulted in reduced service. He urged DeJoy to reverse his decisions and "ensure people can receive their mail in a timely manner."

The letter reads in part:

"The delivery of mail is vital to the fabric of our society and attempts to reduce service have harmed people and will continue to harm people without immediate action."

Congressman Cohen will return to Washington later this week to vote on the Delivering for America Act, restoring mail services and undoing the changes DeJoy has implemented that have interrupted critical deliveries and could disenfranchise those attempting to vote by mail later this year. Congressman Cohen hosted a press conference on Tuesday with affected postal workers at which he called for a reversal of recent cutbacks in service.
