Congressman Cohen Denounces Former President Donald Trump for Failing to Apologize to U.S. Capitol Police Officers in his First Return to Washington, DC
WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) denounced former President Donald Trump for failing to apologize to or acknowledge the bravery of U.S. Capitol Police Officers in his first return to Washington, DC since leaving office.
“I was up there in the balcony when they were beating on the doors, and we were told to get out for our lives and to put on gas masks,” said Congressman Cohen. “Gunfire was in this room. Four officers were killed or died because of that insurrection against our government. Trump didn’t come here to apologize to the Capitol Police, which he should have. He put their lives on the line.”

“This week, the person who occupied the White House for four years before President Biden returned to Washington for the first time since he left.
“Since that time, he’s been found guilty of sexual abuse with E. Jean Carroll, and he’s been found [guilty of] defamation of E. Jean Carroll on two different occasions for nearly $100 million. He’s been found to be fraudulently projecting his income and liabilities in his businesses in New York State to the tune of about a $480 million civil judgement. He’s also been found guilty of a felony in New York State thirty-four times.
“But also, what he did before he left was he led an assault on this Capitol, on this government. I was up there in the balcony when they were beating on the doors, and we were told to get out for our lives and to put on gas masks. Gunfire was in this room. Four officers were killed or died because of that insurrection against our government. Trump didn’t come here to apologize to the Capitol Police, which he should have. He put their lives on the line. It’s unfortunate.
“I yield back the balance of my time.”
