Reminds him that “What’s good for Memphis is good for the country”

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), a senior member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, today questioned Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg at an oversight hearing. In his remarks, Congressman Cohen acknowledged the success of the historic Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and its investments to the 9th Congressional District including two Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grants -- $25 million for the Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) for its Crosstown Corridor Safety and Multi-Modal Enhancement Program and $13.8 million to Shelby County for its Eliminating Barriers on North Watkins (Project ELBOW).

Congressman Cohen also discussed his commitment to Complete Streets principles and noted that Memphis continues to rank as one of the deadliest cities for traffic fatalities, pedestrians and bicyclists. Congressman Cohen praised the recent Safe Streets for All Grant and  urged the Secretary to continue to prioritize Complete Streets funding opportunities and incentive state departments of transportation to utilize additional formula dollars on Complete Streets projects. He also urged the Secretary to consider passenger rail service between Memphis and Nashville as the state of Tennessee continues to pursue various passenger rail corridors.

In his remarks, Congressman Cohen closed by saying:

“What’s good for Memphis is good for the country.”
