Congressman Cohen Elected to Steering and Policy Committee
WASHINGTON -- Congressman Cohen (TN-09) today was elected by the Region VII Delegation as its representative on the powerful Democratic Steering and Policy Committee for the 117th Congress that convenes in January. Region VII encompasses Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Congressman Cohen served as the Region VII Steering and Policy Committee representative in the 116th Congress and, in the 115th Congress, served on the Committee as the appointee of Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
The Steering and Policy Committee recommends Democratic Members for committee assignments and advises Leadership on policy issues.
Congressman Cohen made the following statement:
“I am honored to receive this vote of confidence from my colleagues from Region VII and the opportunity to continue to serve on the Steering and Policy Committee. I was honored to serve on the committee after my appointment by Speaker Pelosi four years ago. As a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee as well as the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, I look forward to using my experience in Congress to help advise the House Democratic Caucus. Democrats must remain committed to protecting civil rights and voting rights for all Americans, preserving the Affordable Care Act, protecting Medicare and Social Security, exercising oversight and creating jobs to build a stronger economy, among other issues. I am grateful my colleagues have placed their trust in me.”
Congressman Cohen was the first Congressman from the Ninth District of Tennessee to serve on the Steering and Policy Committee since Harold Ford Sr. served from 1988-1990 and the first Tennessean to serve on the Committee since John Tanner served from 1996-2004.
In 2008, Speaker Nancy Pelosi referred to Congressman Cohen as the “conscience of the freshman class.” In addition to serving on the Judiciary and Transportation Committees, Congressman Cohen serves on the Committee on Science, Space and Technology in the 116th Congress and has served on the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (also known as the Helsinki Commission) since the 112th Congress (2011-2013). Earlier this month, he was elected to an eighth term representing Tennessee’s Ninth Congressional District.
