Congressman Cohen Endorses President Biden’s U.S. Supreme Court Reforms

July 29, 2024

Term limits, a binding code of ethics and reversal of flawed presidential immunity doctrine

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, today endorsed President Biden’s proposed U.S. Supreme Court reforms. The proposal includes an 18-year term limit for members, a binding code of ethics like the one established for all other federal judges, and a reversal of the disastrous presidential immunity doctrine adopted earlier this month by the conservative supermajority.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

“I wholeheartedly endorse President Biden’s proposed reforms for the U.S. Supreme Court and his proposed ‘No One is Above the Law’ Constitutional Amendment. I have been advocating these ideas for a long time as the Supreme Court has lost its legitimacy and the public’s trust, especially with the ‘president is a king’ decision. This ultra-conservative court does not represent mainstream opinion on many matters, especially fundamental rights as demonstrated in the Dobbs ruling. The Supreme Court must be a creature of its time. Term limits will keep it current. No president should be above the law and this month’s ruling granting presidents immunity from prosecution was a sharp divergence from historical precedent and common sense. Finally, as the outrageous conduct of Justices Alito and Thomas has demonstrated, some meaningful brake on unethical behavior must be imposed. I look forward to working with the Judiciary Committee to advance these reforms.”
