Congressman Cohen Hails Senate Passage of his National Guard and Reservists Debt Relief Extension Act

December 15, 2023

Measure passed the House on Monday

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today hailed the Senate passage of his National Guard and Reservists Debt Relief Extension Act.  Earlier this week, Congressman Cohen managed the House debate and consideration of this important legislation. Now, after being approved by both chambers of Congress, Congressman Cohen’s bill will go to President Biden to be signed into law.

When enacted, the National Guard and Reservists Debt Extension Act will be only the fourth Democratic-led House bill and first House Judiciary Committee bill to become law this year.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

“In these woeful and partisan days in Congress, I’m proud that my friends ‘on the other side of the aisle’ helped my bill along to being the fourth Democratic bill to become law in the 118th Congress. I first introduced legislation to exempt certain National Guard members and reservists from the personal bankruptcy means test in 2008. This policy addressed the unique circumstances faced by National Guard members and reservists called into federal service. It provided parity for these servicemembers and their active-duty counterparts. I was proud to lead efforts to extend this provision in 2015 and 2019. It will now be extended another four years and help many more National Guard members and reservists.”
