Congressman Cohen Highlights Infrastructure Investments at Highway and Transit Hearing

December 13, 2023

Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act has sent millions to Memphis

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), a senior member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, today questioned U.S. Department of Transportation administrators at a hearing on oversight of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA).

Congressman Cohen noted that since the bipartisan infrastructure law was signed into law in late 2021, it has sent $6.2 billion to Tennessee and $140.2 million in federal-aid highway funds to the 9th Congressional District, supporting 47 new projects, in 2023 alone. He also highlighted several discretionary grants that the district has received because of the IIJA such as $76.3 million to the Memphis Area Transit Authority, $38.2 million in Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grants, and $14.8 million from the Airport Terminal Program.

Congressman Cohen also noted a recent $800 million grant application submitted for the Bridge Investment Program by Tennessee’s and Arkansas’ transportation departments that would replace the I-55 bridge over the Mississippi River. This river crossing, in a seismic hazard area, is an essential component of the nation’s transportation system and provides critical support to operations at the Port of Memphis.
