Congressman Cohen Honors Vietnam Veterans during 50th Anniversary Ceremony

March 29, 2016

[MEMPHIS, TN] – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today honored veterans of the Vietnam War during the 50th Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony at the Memphis Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center. On May 25, 2012, President Obama proclaimed that Memorial Day, May 28, 2012 through Veterans Day, November 11, 2025 as the “Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War,” designating March 29 as Vietnam Veterans Day.

“Today’s 50th Anniversary ceremony at the Memphis VA Medical Center was a moving experience,” said Congressman Cohen. “Vietnam veterans went off to an unpopular war and came back from an unpopular war, yet they were still willing to serve our country and make sacrifices for their families and communities. Many saw their friends lose their lives, with more than 58,000 American casualties, yet they were not welcomed back from the war. Vietnam veterans should have been welcomed back, and we should value all of our veterans who serve and make sacrifices for our country. I have three staff members in my office in Memphis who are dedicated to helping veterans with constituent services, and my staff and I will continue to work to ensure that the VA delivers the quality of care veterans deserve. I am pleased the Memphis VA Medical Center’s new acting director Dr. Bill Mills comes to us with a breadth of experience and is intent on improving the quality of service and care at the Memphis VA. We salute Vietnam veterans on this day, and I will continue working with my colleagues in Washington in a bipartisan fashion to improve the VA and support all of our veterans.”
