Says U.S. Transportation Department Pilot Program is bearing fruit

WASHINGTON – Today, at a hearing of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee on which he serves as a senior member, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) praised the U.S. Department of Transportation’s selection of Memphis as center for aerial drone technology and noted the initial success last week of a drone demonstration.

At the hearing, entitled “Airspace Integration of New Aircraft,” Congressman Cohen noted that Memphis was selected in May to be one of 10 sites participating in the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Drone Integration Pilot Program.

“Drones have boundless real-world applications and Memphis is now at the center of this rapidly growing industry,” Congressman Cohen said at the hearing. “It is important to get the policy framework right.” See his remarks on the drone program here.

According to the DOT, the potential economic benefit of drone integration into the national airspace will be upwards of $82 billion and create 100,000 new, high-tech jobs.
