Russian opposition leader dies in Russian prison

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe Parliamentary Assembly’s Special Representative on Political Prisoners, today expressed profound sadness at the in-custody death of Russia’s chief opposition leader Alexei Navalny, and made the following statement:

“Alexei Navalny was a courageous and clever nemesis of the corrupt Putin regime and his in-custody death is an outrageous injustice the whole world should condemn. His inspired leadership of a principled and shrewd opposition led many to hope for a free and fair society where kleptocrats met justice and election results were honored. His loss is a terrible blow for all who hope reforms are possible. He will be missed and mourned by millions.

“Navalny would not have died if he hadn’t been immediately arrested on his return to Russia in 2021, and there is no question Vladimir Putin is responsible. This is another indication that Putin has no regard for human rights and is a scourge on the human race.

“It is important that Alexei Navalny’s legacy includes continued efforts to oppose those who would suppress speech and use government power to silence their opponents. We live in dangerous times where these despots are praised, even by leaders in our own country.  Alexei Navalny was a patriot who spoke the truth and put his life on the line for his country.  He should be revered by all who believe in freedom and justice.  We must transform our grief into resolve to fight despotic oppression. Alexi Navalny devoted his life to making the world a better place.  Let us honor him by continuing that fight.”
