Congressman Cohen Mourns the Passing of James Lawson

In floor speech, says he was “one of the architects of the Civil Rights movement”
WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) went to the House floor Tuesday evening to recall the Reverend James Lawson who passed on Sunday at the age of 95.
In his remarks, Congressman Cohen said in part:
“The world has lost one of its most outstanding citizens…The Reverend James M. Lawson passed away at 95. Reverend Lawson was one of the architects of the Civil Rights movement…He was in Memphis as a minister in 1968 when sanitation workers went on strike – I AM A MAN – and he encouraged Dr. King to come to Memphis, which he did, which resulted in Dr. King’s assassination on April 4th. Reverend Lawson was steadfast on Civil Rights, against the Vietnam War, for gay rights, labor, for progress in this country…His was a life well-lived.”
