Congressman Cohen: One Year Later, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act is Delivering for Tennessee

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, today marked the anniversary of President Biden’s signing of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). Congressman Cohen attended the White House signing ceremony and noted that, to date, over $3.6 billion in IIJA funding has been announced and is headed to Tennessee. Since the IIJA passed, Tennessee is set to receive more than $2.8 billion for transportation to invest in roads, bridges, public transit, ports and airports and more than $120 million for clean water
For Fiscal Year 2022, 45 highway and bridge projects in TN-09 have received $137.9 million in funding. The Memphis metro area will receive a total of $18.7 million of transit funding, in addition to more than $76 million in competitive grant funding that will go toward a new maintenance facility for Memphis Area Transit Authority, electric buses and electronic charging stations.
The Memphis International Airport is set to receive $17.3 million through the Airport Infrastructure Grant Program. And, as of today, more than 49,000 households in TN-09 are receiving affordable internet due to the IIJA.
Congressman Cohen made the following statement:
“One year ago today, I watched as President Biden signed into law a once-in-a-generation investment to create millions of good-paying jobs repairing, rebuilding and revitalizing our communities. The IIJA, which only Congressman Jim Cooper and I supported in the Tennessee Congressional delegation, is already transforming communities with good-paying Davis-Bacon jobs — fixing roads such as Crump Boulevard, upgrading public transit, slashing commute times, cleaning up pollution and more. As we mark the extraordinary progress of the last year, I remain committed to working with the Biden Administration to ensure these investments continue to reach our communities as quickly as possible.”
Congressman Cohen recently announced the IIJA will provide up to $6,715,000 in rebates for Shelby County Schools to replace 17 existing school buses with clean and zero-emission (ZE) models.
