Congressman Cohen Reacts to Indictment of 13 Russian Nationals

February 16, 2018

Says actions “influenced the psychology” of American voters

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) reacted to today's Grand Jury indictments against 13 Russian nationals by Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of pro-Trump Russian influence in the 2016 campaign, and made the following statement:

"The Russians' use of false U.S. personas and social media designed to attract U.S. audiences with divisive political and social issues was clearly intended to sway American voters, and succeeded. Russian manipulation influenced the psychology of American voters.

"Evidence of the Russians' efforts to support the campaign of Donald Trump is no longer in dispute, and neither is the fact that, however uncomfortable it may be getting for the President, this investigation is no ‘hoax.'

"I was pleased to see that the progress in the case was announced by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who selected Mueller and has overseen developments in the case despite reported criticism from the President.

"The special counsel must be permitted to continue to follow the facts so that Americans learn the full extent of Russian involvement in both past and current election contests."
