Congressman Cohen Reintroduces Police CAMERA Act

WASHINGTON -- Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, today reintroduced the Police Creating Accountability by Making Effective Recording Act (CAMERA). The measure establishes a grant program to help state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies purchase body-worn cameras, implement body-worn camera programs, and report to Congress on the impact and effectiveness of the use of body-worn cameras. A version of this bill was included in the 2021 George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. 

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

“Over the past several years, the wider availability of video has helped shine a much-needed light on the public’s deadly encounters with law enforcement. Body-worn cameras help provide often critical evidence and can help restore some much-needed trust between police and the communities they serve.”

Congressman Cohen first introduced a version of the CAMERA bill in 2017 and it was incorporated into the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act in 2021 which passed the House in March of that year.
