Congressman Cohen Reintroduces the TSA Second Screening Act

January 24, 2023

Would help protect health and privacy of the flying public and TSA agents

WASHINGTON – CongressmanSteve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure and Judiciary Committees, has reintroduced the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Second Screening Act. The bill would permit passengers being screened at TSA checkpoints to opt for a second electronic screening -- instead of a mandatory physical pat-down -- if they believe they have produced a false positive result because of inadvertent movement or mistakenly keeping a foreign object in a pocket.

In addition to respecting privacy concerns, the second screening would help limit physical interactions between passengers and TSA personnel at a time when maintaining physical distance can still help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

“The Second Screening Act will allow travelers to have a second electronic or magnetometer screening at TSA airport checkpoints. This would save time, protect privacy, and respect passengers’ screening preferences. Just as important, during the ongoing COVID pandemic, the Second Screening Act will also protect the health and safety of TSA agents and the traveling public by limiting unnecessary physical contact.”
