Congressman Cohen Releases Letter Seeking Removal of Forrest Statue

February 25, 2019

Says displaying bust of the Klansman “is just plain wrong”

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) wrote a follow-up letter to Tennessee Governor Bill Lee on Friday, asking him again to remove the bust of Confederate General and Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard Nathan Bedford Forrest from the State Capitol. A copy can be found here. A copy of the Congressman's January 4th letter to then Governor-elect Lee can be found here.

"I hope you will give due consideration to the message that continuing to display the Forrest bust sends to Tennesseans and the rest of the world," Congressman Cohen wrote. "In 2019, honoring Nathan Bedford Forrest in the State Capitol, which belongs to all our citizens, is just plain wrong. The Forrest bust needs to go."
