Congressman Cohen is Relieved Administration has Reinstated International Student Records

May 1, 2025

Trump policy reversal permits international students to stay and study at Memphis Area universities

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today released the following statement after the Trump Administration reversed decisions to cancel international Student Exchange Visa Information System (SEVIS) records for students across the country, including dozens associated with Memphis area institutions like Christian Brothers University, Rhodes College, and the University of Memphis:

“I am relieved that the Trump administration reversed course and restored the SEVIS records for international students. The Administration’s heavy-handed and arbitrary removal of these records threw dozens of students affiliated with Memphis area institutions into legal limbo.  In total, thousands of students across the country were affected.  After a stinging string of court orders and a large public outcry, the Administration finally realized that its misguided and illegal effort to intimidate international students and immigrant communities wouldn’t work.  Our community will always welcome international students and the rich heritage they add to our lives.”
