Congressman Cohen Remembers Jurist Responsible for Landmark Ruling on Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka

May 17, 2018

The Warren Court’s unanimous decision remains the law of the land

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a member of the House Judiciary Committee, fondly recalled Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, who argued the landmark case that ended the separate but equal doctrine and led to the desegregation of public schools. The ruling came down on this date in 1954. The Congressman made the following statement:

"Brown v. Board of Education was a watershed ruling and ended the inherently unconstitutional system of white and black public schools. Future Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, who led the NAACP legal defense team that developed the strategy in the case, remains a stellar model for all current and future jurists. Everyone nominated to the bench needs to recognize the Brown ruling as the law of the land."
