Anti-apartheid leader raised consciousness
WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today recalled the good done by Winnie Madikizela-Mandela as a leader of the anti-apartheid movement while her husband, Nelson, was imprisoned. Ms. Madikizela-Mandala has died at 81.
Congressman Cohen made the following statement:
"During the 27 years her husband endured imprisonment for his anti-apartheid stand, Winnie Madizikela-Mandela was a powerful force championing his cause, and was imprisoned herself.
"We can remember Winnie Mandela as a forceful voice of conscience that helped change South Africa and perceptions about what is possible through democratic engagement."
