Congressman Cohen’s Environmental Initiatives Pass the House
WASHINGTON – Two environmentally friendly amendments offered by Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) passed the House this morning as part of a federal spending package covering annual Energy & Water, Legislative Branch, and Military Construction and Veterans Affairs appropriations. One prohibits the House of Representatives from purchasing plastic drinking straws for its cafeterias and food service areas. The other provides an additional $2 million to the Department of Energy’s SuperTruck II Program.
Congressman Cohen made the following statement:
“While I remain concerned about other aspects of the overall package, I am pleased that the House included my environmental amendments. Congress should lead the effort to limit the introduction of plastic drinking straws, which not only harm our environment but are particularly dangerous for fish and marine mammals, into the public waste system. More funding for the successful SuperTruck Program, initiated by President Obama, that promotes greater fuel-efficiency in freight trucks, will also help our environment.”
