Congressman Cohen’s Statement on the Death of Veteran Capitol Police Officer Howard Liebengood

January 10, 2021

Expression of condolence follows earlier death of Officer Sicknick

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today extended his condolences to the friends, family and colleagues of veteran U.S. Capitol Police Officer Howard Liebengood, who defended the Capitol during Wednesday's insurrectionist attack and later died off-duty. This follows the Congressman's statement Friday expressing his appreciation for the service of Officer Brian Sicknick, who was killed in the line of duty during Wednesday's attack by Trump loyalists. Congressman Cohen was in the House Gallery during the certification of the Electoral College vote on Wednesday when the Capitol was overrun by extremists.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

"I was saddened to learn of the death of U.S. Capitol Police Officer Howard Liebengood, who helped defend the Capitol during Wednesday's siege, and whose death is reportedly related to his service. I extend my condolences to his family, friends and colleagues and to Senators and Senate staff with whom he worked. On Friday, I expressed my condolences after the death of another veteran Capitol Police Officer, Brian Sicknick, who was reportedly beaten by the insurrectionists attacking our citadel of democracy and later died of his injuries. This marks two police officer deaths related to the President's reckless incitement. These are dark days for our country but we can be inspired by Officers Liebengood and Sicknick and the acts of heroism displayed by those who protect our Capitol and those who work in it."
