Congressman Cohen Says Republicans are Attempting to Delegitimize and Discredit the FBI

July 12, 2023

MAGA attacks on federal law enforcement undermine rule of law

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, today questioned FBI Director Christopher Wray, and called out Republican attacks on the Bureau that are putting agents in danger.

Congressman Cohen asked the Director about the violent attacks on FBI field offices in Cincinnati and Phoenix and the agency’s need to set up a unit to protect its special agents involved in investigating former President Donald Trump against threats. He also asked about the impact of dangerous MAGA conspiracy theories, like the one that Ray Epps was an FBI-planted secret government agent who orchestrated the January 6 attack on the Capitol. Wray labeled the claim that the attack was organized by FBI personnel “ludicrous and a disservice to our brave, hardworking, dedicated men and women.”

In his line of questioning, Congressman Cohen said in part:

“The FBI is our premier law enforcement agency and I support law enforcement. To attack the FBI is to attack law enforcement in general…All of this has happened in the same spirit. Information has been put out on social media in general and members of Congress questioning the FBI…and this has had a deleterious effect on the safety of FBI officials and others.”
