Congressman Cohen Says Roe was Overturned by the Weaponization of the Political System

May 16, 2023

Established precedent reversed by three Trump-nominated Justices

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, today spoke at a hearing entitled “Revisiting the Implications of the FACE Act.” The Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act, a bipartisan measure that became law in 1994, prohibits threats or violence against people seeking reproductive health care.

Congressman Cohen discussed the overturning of Roe v. Wade made possible by Trump’s nomination of three pro-life Justices, and said in part:

“What we’ve got is the weaponization of the political system to destroy a woman’s choice, a woman’s right to choice. I was in law school when Roe was decided. Roe was the law for almost 50 years. It was established law. And we had three Justices that were put on the Supreme Court because of the Federalist Society…The Federalist Society came to (Trump) and said, ‘we’ll help you get the evangelical vote if you will appoint folks we recommend to you’…and Trump did it.”

In his remarks, Congressman Cohen also discussed the just-released report of Justice Department Special Counsel John Durham on Russia’s role in helping Donald Trump become President and the decision by FBI Director James Comey to reopen an investigation of Hillary Clinton’s email practices at the end of the 2016 campaign that helped Trump win.
