Congressman Cohen Seeks Answers on VA Medical Center
WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) expressed concern about the quality of care at the Memphis VA Medical Center Tuesday after media reports surfaced of questionable treatment of a veteran with a hand injury. He released the following statement:
“I discussed the ongoing problems at the VA Medical Center with Director David Dunning today who assured me that internal investigations are under way, and appropriate action will be taken, if warranted, after complaints that a veteran waited more than four hours for treatment in the new emergency department in December and another veteran said he required thumb amputation surgery after inadequate wound care,” Congressman Cohen said.
“It is unacceptable that our one-star facility continues to have reported lapses in consistently offering quality care,” he added. “While I’m encouraged with the job being done by our new director, continual stories like the one I read in today’s Commercial Appeal are disturbing. We must establish, implement and monitor protocols to give our veterans confidence they can rely on the VA.”
