Congressman Cohen Sends Letters Condemning TennCare Block Grant Proposal
WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today wrote letters to the Administrator of the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and to Governor Bill Lee condemning the proposed block-granting of TennCare.
In his letter to CMS, Congressman Cohen noted that the proposal would violate federal law and allow the state unprecedented freedom to direct funds away from Shelby County, the largest population of TennCare beneficiaries. See his letter here.
In his letter to Governor Lee, Congressman Cohen noted that the only scheduled public hearing on the proposal in West Tennessee is set for Madison County, nearly a two-hour drive from Memphis. Congressman Cohen noted that Madison County had 24,528 TennCare beneficiaries in August, while Shelby County had 250,292 – more than 10 times as many. Congressman Cohen requested that a fourth hearing be held in Shelby County so that its residents can be heard. See that letter here.
