Congressman Cohen Statement after Senate Vote on Continuing Resolution

Measure passes on 54-46 vote
MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), who voted against a disastrous continuing resolution to fund federal government programs through September 30 on Tuesday evening, made the following statement after the Senate voted to pass the same measure on a 54-46 vote on Friday night:
“There’s a case to be made that the federal government should remain operating, rather than dormant, as Trump and Musk seek to dismantle large parts of it. I voted against a measure that gave no assurances that the social safety net programs many of my constituents rely on would survive the DOGE assault and was concerned that it gives them the authority to decide where money appropriated by Congress can go. That includes unfathomed reductions in social services so that they can direct $4.5 trillion in future tax cuts to millionaires and billionaires who don’t need them. Cuts to medical research underwritten by the National Institutes of Health that support life-saving science at St. Jude, UTHSC, the University of Memphis and Vanderbilt – among many others – will be slowed or damaged by this legislation, as well as nutrition programs for children, earned benefits for veterans, and so much more. I will continue to fight for sensible support for the programs under attack that we know all Americans strongly support.”
