Congressman Cohen Submits Public Comment on xAI Emissions Permit

May 1, 2025

Expresses concern for cumulative effects of pollution and requests regular inspections by Shelby County Health Department to ensure compliance

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today submitted public comments to Shelby County Health Department (SCHD) Director Dr. Michelle Taylor as the department evaluates an application for an emissions permit for CTC Property LLC’s (CTC’s) xAI supercomputer Colossus.

In his public comment, Congressman Cohen wrote in part:

“Should the permit be granted, I request that Shelby County Health Department (SCHD) require the most stringent emissions controls, frequent reporting on emissions, and regular site visits to ensure compliance…

“I support the strictest emissions requirements because I am concerned about the potential cumulative impact on health that the natural gas-powered turbines may have on the neighboring communities…”

“If SCHD determines the permit shall be issued, I request that you continue working with CTC to implement the most advanced technologies to minimize emissions, including real-time monitoring.”
