Congressman Cohen Tonight Held a Successful Town Hall Meeting

August 11, 2025

Answered constituents’ questions and fears at big gathering

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) tonight held a successful town hall meeting where he addressed constituents’ questions about what’s happening to the social safety net under the Trump Administration and vowed to oppose the serious devastation and chaos it is causing. A crowd of more than 300 attended the Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church event for the second in-person town hall Congressman Cohen has held this year.

Congressman Cohen was joined by Shana Watkins, the health advocacy program manager at the Tennessee Justice Center (TJC), and Danielle Branch, a health policy and advocacy associate at TJC, who addressed the harmful aspects of cuts to Medicaid and other safety net programs in the One Big Ugly Bill that Trump signed on July 4. One participant asked about losing her elderly brother on Medicaid. Congressman Cohen also talked about the need to defend voting rights and voting integrity, the Elon Musk xAI supercomputer and clean air issues.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

“I am always encouraged to see my constituents involved in our nation’s and our community’s public policy debates. Tonight, I believe I was successful in communicating how serious a threat this administration is to the interests of the 9th Congressional District, particularly its most vulnerable low income and elderly residents. We also discussed important foreign policy issues, including the continued war in Gaza and the need to release hostages, as Trump makes unfulfilled promises and upends the world economy, taking positions that astound and confuse our longtime allies. I look forward to a continuation of this kind of dialogue and thank the Tennessee Justice Center and those who took the time to come out tonight to address our community’s major concerns.”
