Congressman Cohen Votes Against Impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas

February 6, 2024

No basis for unwarranted and misguided course of action

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today voted against the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. The resolution to impeach the Secretary failed on a vote of 216 to 214.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

“I voted against this sham impeachment because it is an unconstitutional power grab and a baseless attack on a public servant with whom some Republicans simply disagree. There is no evidence of an impeachable offense, so the majority just ignored the Constitutional standard. This cynical attempt to attack a cabinet secretary over policy differences creates a dangerous precedent that trivializes impeachment and undercuts the rule of law.

“This is just a part of the Republican caucus plan for using the border to help the Trump campaign and not caring that they are maligning and tarring a dedicated public servant. Another phase of the attempt, of course, is not voting on a legislative fix to the border issue, putting politics over country.”
